ISSUE 038 | 20 June 2023

Hi friends!

I had a bit of a low moment last Friday, when the overwhelm of the world's most pressing problems got a bit on top of me (probably from listening to too many podcasts on climate change, the housing crisis and the latest one terrifying me is P(doom) - google that phrase, or actually, maybe don't…).

I struggle with finding purpose sometimes, and quite often run into my husband in the kitchen in the middle of the day (we both work from home), throw our hands in the air and ask each other “what's the meaning of life/what is this all about/why are we here?” If anyone has the answer, I'd really like to know!

I managed to turn my mental state around much later that night with a bolt of inspiration about our life path (my husband received a text from me at 12:46am saying “I have an amazing idea”). It involves setting up a small conservation non-profit, turning my business into a social enterprise by donating a percentage of profits (say 50%), sinking some money into land with high biodiversity values, tying a few other things together, and well, I better now get to work. I'll toil away at this plan at least until the robots get me anyway…

Donating the red stuff

Last week was National Blood Donor week - a week of celebrating donors. I'm one of the 7% of us with O neg blood that can donate to anyone, so I've recently gotten back into the habit of regular donations.

Having the guts to say no to bad money

This is an excellent article about saying no to paid work that goes against our personal values or tries to change behaviours in a way that we disagree with - i.e. ‘bad money’. Even if you don't own your own business, it has tips on how to stand up for what you do and don't believe in.

Self-help books distilled

The closest I've ever come to finishing a self-help book was reading a few chapters of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck (my attention span is not great anymore). But I found this great piece that condenses the recurring lessons from the entire self help genre into a single article.

Save yourself the trouble of sifting through the numerous bestsellers and find here the 11 pieces of distilled advice that has been repeatedly shared throughout history.
