It's truffle season in Victoria (well, hitting the end of it now), and I thought that finding a truffle farmer would be a great fit for An Honest Trade. I found Oak Hill Truffles from a search online, and headed out to the historic Goldfields town of Gordon to meet Ian and Merilyn Woodhouse. Established in 2007 on the site of the original Gordon Presbytery and Convent, Ian and Merilyn produced their first Black Perigord truffle(Tuber Melanosporum) in 2012, and each year their yield is growing.
Their truffle dog Sally is a former rescue dog, and Max the 9 month old lab has just joined the pack and has started his training. Ian and Merilyn are former graziers from the Western District, and certainly know their way around the land. They run tours each year, and sell their truffle gold from local markets and select restaurants.
